Orthopaedic surgery and orthopaedics (alternatively spelled orthopedic surgery or orthopedics) is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.
The name was derived from two ancient greek words of “Orthos” meaning “Straight” and “paidion” meaning child. Although orthopaedics brings traumatic and wear and tear problems to mind more often congenital skeletal abnormalities such as scoliosis of spine and other bony deformities are also an important field of medicine orthopaedics deals with.
As we have to move for survival musculoskeletal system is one of the most intensely used systems of body which brings out wear and tear problems especially in the elderly. Besides normal wear and tear damages, people who are making excessive sports may experience sports injuries such as rotator cuff tears or meniscial problems in knee. Traumas resulting of any cause is another major impact which may often bringout serious orthopedic problems.

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgery procedure performed with the arthroscope – a form of the endoscope driven into the joint through a microincision for joint damage diagnostics and/or treatment purposes. Arthroscopic procedures are executed both for the diagnostics and for the treatment of various orthopedic disorders. Arthroscopic surgery advantages are:
- short stay at the hospital (1, maximum 4 days);
- fast examination - 30 - 60 minutes;
- reliable accurate diagnostics;
- minimally invasive - insignificant damage to the tissues;
- shortened rehabilitation period.
The advantage of arthroscopy over the traditional open surgery is that the joint is not open completely. Instead, when performing an arthroscopic surgery, only two small holes are made - one for inserting the arthroscope, another one is for the surgical instruments. This reduces the process of the postoperative recovery and increases the chance of success for the surgery, since the degree of the damage for the connective tissues is much lower compared to the open surgery. Most often the arthroscopy is performed on knee joint, shoulder joint, elbow joint, radicarpal joint, hip joint, ankle joint, foot joints.
Knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical manipulation that allows to obtain the accurate diagnosis of knee diseases, to examine the real-time examination of the intra-articular structures, if necessary to carry out the joint capsule biopsy, and a variety of the therapeutic surgical manipula...
Arthroscopy of the shoulder joint is performed in cases when there are various injuries, traumas and pathologies in the shoulder joint causing the patient unpleasant sensations, pain and movement disorders that cannot be treated with conservative methods - physiotherapy, injections or medication adm...
