Fatty Liver Disease: Causes and Home Remedies

Fatty liver also referred to as hepatic steatosis, is a result of the excess fat in liver cells. Due to some bad habits in our daily life such as unhealthy diet, drinking alcohol, fatty tissue builds up in the liver, and it causes functional and structural impairments in the liver. Fatty liver disease may end up liver cancer or cirrhosis. Even if currently there is not a proven solution to treat fatty liver, with a little bit care and precaution, we can reduce the amount of the fatty tissue in the liver by changing our lifestyle, losing weight and putting more physical activity to our life.

What Causes Fatty Liver Disease?

  • Sugary Drinks and Food: If you have packaged food and fizzy drinks instead of fresh fruit, vegetable, and water, then your body intake so much glucose, fructose and corn syrup. The researches show that having so much packaged food and fizzy drinks trigger obesity and create insulin resistance; then these lead to building up fatty tissue in the liver. To prevent this, you should stay away from the foods that have preservatives and additives. You should replace fizzy drinks with water, coffee and tea, burgers with fish, and french fries with a salad. Instead of simple carbohydrates (such as white bread, potato, corn, pizza, pasta, chips, cereals, fizzy drinks), you should have complex carbohydrates (such as whole grain bread, fresh fruit, and green vegetable).
  • Sedentary Life: If you have a sedentary lifestyle, primarily if you work in a table for 7-8 hours a day, then you are at risk. Try to move and do physical exercise as possible as you can. Walking for 45 minutes a day helps fat build-up in the liver slow down. Physical activity reduces the insulin resistance, which plays an essential role in fatty liver disease. If you have the possibility to do pilates, swim or any physical activity, you will lower the risk for the fatty liver disease.
  • Alcohol: If you regularly over-drink, then you might be at risk for the fatty liver disease. Men who have more than three drinks and women who have more than two glasses a day are at higher risk for liver damage. If you stay away from alcohol for approximately six weeks, then the fatty tissue in the liver start disappearing. However, if you continue to intake excessive drinking, then it may lead to cirrhosis. To prevent yourself, you should stick to healthy limits. You should not get drunk to escape your problems.

What are the Home Remedies for Fatty Liver Disease?

  • Lemon: Lemons are known for their high Vitamin C content. Lemons also have Glutathione, Eriocitrin, and Naringenin. These three musketeers are potent antioxidants that help repair fatty liver disease, detoxification in the liver and ease liver inflammation. That is the reason why most people start their day with a big glass of water flavored with lemon. The recipe is straightforward: squeeze the half lemon in a glass of water and drink it 2 or 3 times a day for several weeks.
  • Green Tea: Nowadays green tea has been a trendy beverage as it is associated with therapeutic purposes. Green tea is also beneficial for the fatty liver because it blocks the amount of fat stored in the liver and improves liver function. If you regularly drink 2 or 3 cups of green tea a day, it will lower the risk for a nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: Apple cider vinegar is a natural remedy that helps get rid of the fatty tissue that accumulates in the liver and keeps the liver healthy. All you need to do is to add a spoonful of apple cider vinegar into a glass of warm water and drink it twice a day before meals. If you want, you can also add a teaspoon of honey. You should continue to use this method regularly for 1-2 months.
